Liaise Bistro, a hidden gem in the heart of Newton Abbot, invited me to pop along and spend the evening with them, and better still, to judge their create a cocktail recipe competition.
Adam, the owner and Head Chef is one of the nicest people I have had the pleasure of meeting. A twinkle in his eye, a cheeky sense of humour and a flare for flavour in the kitchen and on the bar, I was bound to like him. Not like most bistro owners or Chefs, Adam is out walking around the restaurant when he isn’t needed in the kitchen, saying hello to guests and then shaking up cocktails on the bar to see what new combinations he can come up with next.
The restaurant rustles up breakfast, lunch and dinner! The menu has a range of quality steaks, fish dishes, burgers and salads, all locally sourced for the best flavour. The bar caters for all, a selection of soft drinks, beers, ciders, wines but has a great Gin selection and also now some great tasting cocktails.
For dinner I chose a starter of Whitebait and for main the Sirloin Steak, served with home made chips, salad and onion rings! The steak was Juicy, cooked perfectly (as a medium rare) and all the food was piping hot. There is nothing worse than a meal arriving warm, but this was straight out of the oven hot and delicious!
I was asked to be part of the panel of judges who chose the winning cocktail from the entries received. The competition winner has won a years worth of cocktails with LiAise worth £390! and had their cocktail creation included on the bistro’s new cocktail menu.
There was a whole range of entry cocktails to choose from. For me a cocktail is drank when you are feeling good, so a celebration or special occasion, therefore a cocktail should be fun from start to finish. This includes the glass, garnish, colours and even how its all put together.
The winning cocktail was from Zoe Stratford who came up with the ‘Jaffa Cake Twist!’ Vodka based with a shot of Tia Maria and topped up with orange juice and a shot of grenadine for colour. Yummy!
LiAise is tucked up above Market walk in Newton Abbot with an outside seating area so you can soak up the evening sun and hustle from below. Not only does Liaise have a wonderful menu and drinks selection, they put on a Comedy Club, Steak nights, Fizz & chips evening and have local live musician playing regularly.
Newton Abbot is currently in the middle of a massive town revamp with new shops arriving, plans for big hotel chains to build and more choice of restaurants and bars. Liaise is certainly leading the way with their relaxed and friendly vibe with a dash of sophistication added in.
Next time you’re in Market Walk, pop upstairs to LiAise and see what all the fuss is about! xx
